Black Hole Explorer

Browse real black holes, from stellar-mass remnants to ultramassive giants. Pick one to see its numbers and a live graphic drawn in code from its mass, spin and type.

Graphics are artistic and drawn live in code, not real images. The disk size follows the spin (a faster spin lets matter orbit closer), the colour follows the mass (lighter black holes run hotter and bluer), and the shape follows the type.

Constants: c = 299,792,458 m/s · G = 6.6743 × 10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg² · M☉ = 1.988416 × 10³⁰ kg · R☉ = 695,700 km · 1 AU = 149,597,870.7 km. Schwarzschild radius = 2GM/c². With a measured spin, the black hole radius is the outer event horizon, GM/c² × (1 + √(1 − a²)). Light-crossing time is the radius divided by c. Average density is the mass divided by the volume of a sphere with the Schwarzschild radius. Comoving distance is worked out from the light-travel distance with a flat ΛCDM model (H₀ = 67.66 km/s/Mpc, Ωm = 0.3111) and is shown only for objects beyond 10 million light-years.
